Kate planned to leave town as soon as she knew Doc was out of harm’s way. She was aware she wasn’t wanted in Tombstone. “It was after that,” Kate noted later, referring to her arrest by Virgil Earp, “Wyatt Earp became anxious to get rid of me. Several days later [once she was released] a gambler named J. M. Nichols, also known as Napa Nick, invited me to go for a buggy ride with him, but I declined. Mattie Earp, Wyatt’s wife, later told me in Globe that I was lucky in refusing the buggy ride, as Napa Nick had instructions to get rid of me in some lonely canyon.”17
Reflecting on the turbulent and sad incident in her life years later, Kate confessed, “After the stage holdup Doc turned against me. I found out it was he who got Virgil Earp to lock me up in the hotel room. Wyatt and Virgil were doing all they could to get Doc to send me away, and no doubt they would have carried their point if I had let them.
“In order to block them I swore out a warrant charging Doc with murder and he was arrested by Sheriff Behan; and then Wyatt Earp and others of his gang furnished $5,000 bail to get him out. It took all the persecution of the Earps and all the law officers aligned with them to make me quit. In doing as I did I was taking a desperate chance, but I lost out.”18
Kate returned to Globe and within a short time was faced with the difficult task of starting over. A fire claimed her boarding house and all her belongings. Kate suspected the fire was set intentionally by people hired to do the job for the Earps. She believed the fire was penance for her not keeping her “big nose” out of the Earps’ business.19
While Kate was in Globe lamenting the great losses she’d experienced in a short amount of time, Doc remained in Tombstone trying to clear his name. Two of the men who had robbed the stage outside Benson had been seen in New Mexico Territory. Before Doc could enlist riders to help him track Bill Leonard and Harry Head to Eureka, New Mexico, the outlaws were shot and killed. Jim Crane was now the one and only thief who helped robbed the Arizona Mail Stage Company coach still alive. Doc wanted Crane found and made to tell the truth about the robbery.20
It was rumored that Crane had been seen with some of the cowboys from the Arizona Territory, namely, Ike Clanton and Frank McLaury. Wyatt Earp made a deal with Ike and Frank that if they told the law enforcement agent the whereabouts of Crane he would make sure they received the reward being offered for his arrest. Wyatt was informed that the criminal was last seen at the Clantons’ ranch near Cloverdale, New Mexico. Wyatt, along with his brothers Morgan and Warren, and Doc Holliday started for the area right away.
